Parkway Playing Fields: Survey Results

Last year together with the local authority and the parks team we attempted to begin the process of building a long-term vision for Parkway Playing Fields, in consultation with the residents of Merseybank. We conducted surveys for two age groups: under 16s and 16+ and as result we received 146 responses.

You can read the shortened survey results here:

Merseybank Green Group – Now a community group!

Hi everyone,

We are happy to share the news that our group has been now formally constituted. While we have been active on several fronts over the last year becoming a Community Group will assure that the decision making process is democratic and represents the voices of our diverse community. We have managed to put together an amazing group of leads coming from various backgrounds and with different sets of skills and interests.

This first step will allow us to open a bank account and apply for funding required for bringing the ideas to life. The further step will be registering as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, which in other words is a form of charity that will give us more incentives while keeping things simple and transparent.

Thank you for your participation so far, we hope that you share our enthusiasm and carry on with your involvement by joining our events, sharing your ideas and volunteering. In case you’d like to dive into the details of the Sunday’s founding meeting see the attached minutes.

School Street – Road Closure 15-16/06/21

On the 15th and 16th of June there will be School Street road closure events outside Barlow Hall school, organised in partnership between school staff, Our Streets Chorlton and Sustrans.

The council have given permission to close Darley Avenue for a short section between Mottram Avenue and Barlow Hall Rd, from 8.30 am to 9.15 am and 2.30 pm to 4.00 pm on both days, to encourage people to walk or cycle to school.

Residents will be able to access their houses and take deliveries. The bus, blue badge holders and utility companies will be able to pass through. The road barriers will be staffed by experienced marshals. Diversions will be signed and we aim for minimal disruption and maximum joy! For further info you can email hello@ourstreetschorlton.co.uk.

Be(e) Merseybank

Be(e) Merseybank are local organisations, residents, activists, artists working together to show love to our neighbours and our shared spaces. Over the last year we created something special, lets keep that spirit going! Turn up to one or more of the planned events and Be(e) Merseybank!

The series of events will take place between Sat 15/05 and Sun 23/05. We are starting with the Clearfields Festival this Saturday at 10AM. We’ll be clearing our fields in style. It might be your only festival experience this year so make sure you don’t miss out.

On Sunday will be hosting an Orchard info session on Parkway Playing Fields. We invite everyone to come and picnic around our new fruit trees (as long as weather allows!). We’ll be giving away some wildflower seeds, providing more information about the ongoing projects and will set up some games for children to be used under parental/carer supervision. We look forward to meeting you at one or more upcoming events!

As always if you have and questions drop us an email: contact@merseybankgreengroup or joun our Facebook group: Merseybank Green Group Forum.

Active Travel Scheme: Consultation

Manchester City Council and Transport for Greater Manchester are currently holding consultations for Wythenshawe Active Travel Scheme.

The scheme aims to provide some new dedicated cycling and walking infrastructure from the Simonsway, crossing Hollyhedge Rd, down Hall Lane, through Wythenshawe Park and through to Chorlton Water Park. The proposed route ties into the airport via a link at Simonsway to the east (also picking up the town centre) and Wythenshawe hospital cycle link to the west.

As the route travels North it picks up Wythenshawe park, a link to Chorlton Water Park and finally ties into multiple routes to Manchester.

A series of on-line events will take place between 26 April and 14 May If you’d like to get involved email atswythenshawe@manchester.gov.uk and state which event you’d like to join. All events will be from 6.30pm to 7.30pm:

Monday 26 April – Airport bridge to M56 bridge

Monday 10 May – M56 bridge to Wythenshawe Park

Wednesday 12 May – Wythenshawe Park to Kenworthy Woods

Friday 14 May – Kenworthy Woods to Chorlton Water Park

Upcoming bat detector workshops

Bat Conservation Trust released upcoming bat detector workshops. Merseybank Green Group aspires to set up a wildlife working group to carry our regular bat detection events. We are really lucky to have bats present around Playing Fields, Chorlton Water Park as well as living on the actual estate!

Below is the Trust’s invitation:

We have some NBMP bat detector/survey workshops coming up which may be of interest to you. These are all being held online.

These three workshops are designed to help you get involved with NBMP surveys at different levels.

1.    Discover Your Local Bats is a free workshop aimed at complete beginners and will show you how to get started with your first bat count.

2.    NBMP Level 1 is for anyone who is quite new to using a heterodyne bat detector with a particular focus on taking part in the Waterway SurveyOnly £3 for NBMP volunteers.

3.    NBMP Level 2 (“Using Your Ears”) is a more in-depth heterodyne bat detector workshop which provides the skills for taking part in the Field Survey as well as the Waterway Survey. Only £3 for NBMP volunteers.

You may like to attend all three or simply attend one or two that are most appropriate to your current level and your goals for this year.

Full details and booking forms can be found here.

Please do pass this information on to anyone else you think might be interested.
